What policies could improve public and private transport infrastructure?

Replace Vehicle Excise Duty with a 'pay-as-you-go' model of road taxation based on motorway tolls with graded payments based on CO2 emissions of each vehicle.

Commit to supporting the http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-25549789 scheme in Londond, and investigating the viability of similar such schemes in other cities.

Work with automobile manufacturers to establish ways of providing infrastructure to support driverless vehicles.

Commit to installing a network of charging units for electric vehicles along every motorway, and in every large town and city.

Not sure about the motorway toll thing; if the idea is to tax based on distance and efficiency, why not scrap VED completely and put it all on fuel?

I agree with @floppy - the "road tax" is on fuel in Jersey (I believe) and one also has to pay a duty on import of the vehicle based on engine size.

I'd also love to see fleets of taxis replaced with electric cars. I really don't understand why this hasn't been a first target for EV penetration since they only typically travel relatively short distances and park up at known places...

I think we could merge this, and I'll do another PR to suggest scrapping road tax completely and replacing with fuel tax. So, 👍

Thumbs up from me also. But for the avoidance of confusion with readers, all references should be to either VED or Vehicle Excise Duty with "road tax" in quotation marks as it is commonly known.

"motorway tolls with graded payments based on CO2 emissions of each vehicle." Given that VED is already based on emissions do we really need the inconvenience (and cost!) of tolls? Given mileage is recorded by MOTs, couldn't we bill for VED after each MOT? It'd digitise it all too.

I also have deep reservations about SkyCycle. Isn't it just further segregation of cyclists? Better, surely, would be to have the cars up there and all but the major roads pedestrianised for use by cyclists too.

Maybe we should rephrase to add support for cycling schemes in general, rather than specific schemes which may turn out to be infeasible.

Certainly need significantly greater investment in cycling infrastructure. I have lost count of the number of times political colleagues have refuted the idea of cycle lanes because "no-one around here cycles".

It seems to me that there must be a cycling group whose existing policy we can adopt on this.

Yes, let's split this up. @PaulJRobinson, want to do that?

Has this been all moved to other PRs now? @PaulJRobinson, go ahead and close it if so.
